Nobody buys a supplement for the “other ingredients"

Let's be honest.

Has anyone, ever, stood in a health food shop and thought...

"Ooo... I love a bit of calcium silicate."

No?

How about...

"This one's got extra buffers."

"Sold."

Or...

"Finally! A supplement with anti-caking agents."

Didn't think so.

We buy supplements for the good stuff.

The magnesium.

The taurine.

The vitamin D.

The CoQ10.

The ingredients we actually want to put into our bodies.

Everything else just comes along for the ride.

Then I noticed something.

Recently, I spent some time researching some of the biggest supplement brands.

Every one of them proudly explained the active ingredients.

The science.

The research.

The benefits.

The reasons they chose each ingredient.

Then I turned the packet over.

There it was.

Another ingredient list.

Flavourings.

Fillers.

Buffers.

Flow agents.

Anti-caking agents.

Stabilisers.

Sweeteners.

Interesting.

Not because those ingredients are necessarily bad.

Because almost nobody talks about them.

Every supplement has two ingredient lists.

The one they market.

And the one they legally have to declare.

The first gets the glossy webpages.

The second usually appears in tiny writing on the back of the packet.

Yet every single one ends up in your body.

Now before anyone accuses me of declaring war on silicon dioxide...

I'm not.

Silicon dioxide isn't the villain of this story.

Neither are flavourings.

Or buffers.

Or anti-caking agents.

Every one of them has a purpose.

They stop powders clumping.

They help manufacturing.

They help manufacturers achieve the shelf life they need.

They make production easier and more consistent.

All perfectly sensible engineering solutions.

The question is... whose problem are they solving?

Your magnesium is there for you.

Your vitamin D is there for you.

Your taurine is there for you.

The flow agent isn't.

We made one decision that changed everything.

When we developed XORRO, we made one rule.

The formulation came first.

Everything else had to work around it.

Not the other way round.

If that meant smaller production batches...

Fine.

If it meant individually sealed daily sachets...

Fine.

If it meant a more demanding manufacturing process...

Fine.

Those were engineering challenges for us to solve.

Not reasons to compromise the formulation.

What about the taste?

People sometimes ask why XORRO doesn't taste like berries.

The answer is simple.

We didn't formulate it to taste like berries.

We formulated it to deliver the nutrients we believed mattered most.

The taste comes from the ingredients themselves.

Have you ever wondered why your supplement tastes like berries?

It isn't the magnesium.

It isn't the taurine.

It isn't the CoQ10.

It tastes like berries because someone had to create that berry flavour, process it and add it to the formulation.

Many labels describe these as natural flavourings.

That's a statement about where they originated.

It isn't a statement about what happened next.

By the time they reach your supplement, they've been extracted, processed and formulated to perform a very specific job.

Which brings us back to the question we kept asking ourselves...

Does this ingredient make the formulation better?

Or is it simply there to make the supplement taste like berries?

If the answer was no...

It didn't make the formulation.

The philosophy behind XORRO

Every product is a series of compromises.

Ours was simple.

We refused to compromise the formulation for the sake of manufacturing convenience.

So we didn't engineer the formulation around the manufacturing process.

We engineered the manufacturing process around the formulation.

It certainly isn't the easiest way to make a supplement.

It certainly isn't the cheapest.

But if we're asking someone to consume something every day...

Every ingredient should justify its place.

One last thought...

The next time you compare two supplements, don't just compare the ingredients the company wants you to notice.

Turn the packet over.

Read the whole ingredient list.

Then ask one simple question.

Why is every ingredient there?

At XORRO, that wasn't the last question we asked.

It was the first.
